Cockeyed, she scries,
filled the colorless sky.
Her skin shivers
in a spidery twitching,
awash in a wasabi sinus scald.
Should she shave her head,
rub ashes until pimples puss,
lay prone and moan over a backless grave-
-as women in the past had done
when their man was gone?
It feels like pushing a steam roller
wading upstream in the river-mud
to shove a suitcase down the hall.
Why do we only
call men
cuckold?

learned a new word - didn't know what cuckold is..i like how you write on this serious topic with lots of good imagery that displays the struggle and pain
ReplyDeletewow...great word play...pushing that steam roller must be a beast...like a suitcase....or wasabi sinus...that was wicked...
ReplyDeleteWhy indeed? I have often wondered that, as well.
ReplyDeleteWonderful Magpie. Great imagery!

This is beautifully written .....
ReplyDeleteLove it. 'Awash in a wasabi sinus scald' - been there, done that. I don't think the Japanese suffer sinus problems. Great Magpie.
ReplyDeleteVery powerful piece. I felt it like a punch in the guts. Cuckold is an interesting term humiliating the husband whose wife has had an affair. Strangely it's probably more likely to be a case of the shoe being on the other foot, given men's tendencies. I checked on Wickipedia and there is a word for women: Cuckquean
ReplyDeleteA powerful write, love that you used the word cuckold, too.
ReplyDeletewhat images, diane! i didn't know this term either. when i think of roosters, i don't think of qualities of tenderness or sensitivity. that may be a bum rap based on i don't-know-why-i-think-that.
ReplyDeleteso now i'm chronicling through the guys i've know who remind me of roosters.... :)
have a good week ♥
This was really good. It hits hard in all the right places. The imagery is fabulous.
ReplyDeleteDiane:
